Welcome or goodbye, both can be used on this page since you are either an incoming student or an outgoing student researching on what to prepare for your period abroad. On this page you can find all study and university related information for an exchange program. This information is sometimes hard to find on the University of Twente website so we have simplified it for you and here and there give you some references to more detailed information. Side note the information provided is from the BMS faculty perspective the faculty of Behavior and Managerial Sciences of which IBA and IEM take part, since IBA, BA and IEM are the studies of our study association we took this perspective when writing the pieces of the exchange program.

Outgoing exchange students

The University of Twente, Faculty of Behavioural, Management and Social Sciences, offers several possibilities to go abroad as part of your study programme;

  • Study Abroad: following courses at a foreign University
  • Minor: Crossing Borders (2 x 15 EC)
  • Bachelor assignment abroad (15 EC)
  • Master assignment abroad (25-30 EC)
  • Double Degree Master programme

The specifics on partner universities and destinations you can attend are specified on the canvas page BMS Study Abroad. Here you can find an overview of destinations and what options are available for you to follow one of the above possibilities within the BMS faculty. For more general information of the University of Twente you can see it here.

What do you need

Before being able to enroll to go abroad there are some requirements you need to follow.

  • Have the following study points/ requirements;
    • IEM bachelor students; 75 EC (so 5 complete modules) registered at 1 August
    • IBA bachelor students; 90 EC (so 6 complete modules) registered at the 1 August
  • To be able to reserve a spot at a partner university as a bachelor student, you must have passed courses with at least 60 EC registered on 1 February of the year of going abroad.

For the second semester (2A and 2B);

When studying abroad for your minor programm keep in mind that you need to have 30 ECTS credits upon return, otherwise you have to compensate for the missing credits. So it is easiest to assume you have to pass everything that you get presented during your time abroad.

What do you have to do

Orientation

Most students that are interested start a year prior to the time frame they want to be abroad. It is not just the country you have to choose but also what study you want to do and if it is possible to go. Therefore the advice is to start a year prior and talk to your study advisor regarding the interests you have.
Next to that the UT offers a lot of information you can get access to via the above mentioned canvas page and link. The UT also has an Instagram page (@study_abroad_utwente), such that you can get a picture of the options you have.
Take a good look at the requirements of the universities themselves; some have language or knowledge requirements you have to meet. Next to that for non-partner universities or studies that are not within the BMS faculty additional criteria are to be fulfilled. The criteria for non partner universities are clearly stated on BMS Study Abroad canvas page.

Selection

When you are done with your orientation you have to hand in your top 6 destinations, the UT partner universities are very popular so make sure to mention these first if they are a match. When going through the selection process make sure to deliver your motivation letter and do the following;

  • UT wide partners apply through the UT system Mobility Online
  • Submit via email to J.H. Stout following information;
    • Up to date transcript of records
    • Preliminary course list (UT wide partners only)
    • Name according to your passport
    • Date and place of birth
    • Number of registered EC and our grade point average

Getting selected

When getting selected the university will send you an email with the enrollment information for the university of your choice. This email will tell you what to do from there. When getting selected you cannot switch destinations anymore, so then the decision is final.

Sometimes it happens that you are not able to go to the university and destination you wanted, therefore there is a second selection process for you to get reoriented and have a second chance to find a university and destination that you like.
